Illinois Public Libraries
The state of Illinois has a large number of public libraries. A public library is a library, accessible by the public and funded with public money. Public libraries are an integral part of having a well-educated and literate population; they provide free access to information and promote lifelong learning. Illinois public libraries offer not only books and periodicals but also a wide variety of other media including CDs, software, video tapes and DVDs, Internet access, downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music and video. Libraries also host an array of special programs like continuing education programs, workshops for children and classes on a variety of subjects; they produce publications as well.
