Public School Districts in Illinois
Illinois has about 875 school districts, among the most in the nation. Approximately a quarter of them are single-school districts. In the recent years, efforts were made to reduce the number of school districts in Illinois by merging high school districts with feeder elementary districts, thus making education more efficient and freeing up more money for classrooms. Different school districts have different revenue and expenditures, with an average of $7,000 spent per student each year, ranking Illinois schools 29th nationally. While some parents opt to send their children to private schools, the majority lean towards public schools. Illinois public schools have a student-teacher ratio of 15:1, while private schools average 11:1. There are many advantages to attending a public school - it offers a diverse atmosphere, the cost of attending a public school is significantly lower than the cost of attending a private school, and while all public schools are mandated, some private schools are not.
